Earworm of the Day: “When You Believe” | 2017-12-26

“When You Believe” from The Prince of Egypt. Remember when people cared about/remembered this DreamWorks movie? Those were good days for society.

The Whitney Houston version is almost the only version you can find anywhere, and it is a complete butchering of the emotion, dignity, and majesty of the original. It kinda stinks of celebrity pop money instead of having the sense of focus that the original had. The Hebrew part in the soundtrack version was removed from the pop version, and it is particularly poignant. Religious or not, you can feel the weight of the Hebrew lyrics sung by the children, straight out of the psalms recorded in the Bible. You know, showing actual reverence to God when the goddamned movie is The Prince of Egypt. Any other movie, I wouldn’t care if the part about God was left out. And regardless of what it is about, I always welcome respect and dignity.

A-shir-ra I’a-do-nai ki ga-oh ga-ah
(I will sing to the Lord for He has triumphed gloriously)
A-shir-ra I’a-do-nai ki ga-oh ga-ah
(I will sing to the Lord for He has triumphed gloriously)
Mi-cha-mo-cha ba-e-lim adonai
(Who is like You, oh Lord, among the celestials)
Mi-ka-mo-cha ne-dar-ba-ko-desh
(Who is like You, majestic in holiness)
Na-chi-tah v’-chas-d’-cha am zu ga-al-ta
(In Your love, You lead the people You redeemed)
Na-chi-tah v’-chas-d’-cha am zu ga-al-ta
(In Your love, You lead the people You redeemed)
A-shi-ra, a-shi-ra, A-shi-ra
A-shir-ra I’a-do-nai ki ga-oh ga-ah
(I will sing to the Lord for He has triumphed gloriously)
A-shir-ra I’a-do-nai ki ga-oh ga-ah
(I will sing to the Lord for He has triumphed gloriously)
Mi-cha-mo-cha ba-e-lim adonai
(Who is like You, oh Lord, among the celestials)
Mi-ka-mo-cha ne-dar-ba-ko-desh
(Who is like You, majestic in holiness)
Na-chi-tah v’-chas-d’-cha am zu ga-al-ta
(In Your love, You lead the people You redeemed)
Na-chi-tah v’-chas-d’-cha am zu ga-al-ta
(In Your love, You lead the people You redeemed)
A-shi-ra, a-shi-ra, A-shi-ra

The pop version replaced it with uninspired crap with an unmemorable melody. Because of course it did. I’m just going to enjoy the original.
